Traffic and Crosswalk Safety Duty
Introduction
Hello parents,
- As you are aware, starting September, each family will be required to complete 3 hours of Traffic and Crosswalk Safety Duty. This will be a mandatory component of the 30 Hour per year parent-participation expectation.
- There will be three crosswalk areas requiring traffic control.
(1) The Nanaimo Street Crosswalk/Parking Lot Entrance; (2) The Waverley Avenue Crosswalk/Parking Lot Exit; and (3) The Waverley Avenue and Nanaimo Street Crosswalk
- Families will have an opportunity to sign-up for these crosswalk areas on Signup.com Each family will sign up for 6 supervision times (or more) throughout the school year.
- If parents are unable to fulfill these 3 mandatory hours of Traffic and Crosswalk Safety Duty, the responsibility falls upon the parents to arrange for someone else to cover for them.
- Under extenuating circumstances, exceptions may be allowed with the approval of the Pastor, Principal and the Participation Coordinator.
- If parents have signed up to supervise for morning or after school supervision and for some unforeseen reason cannot supervise at the scheduled time, parents MUST find a replacement and inform the school office. It is the parents’ responsibility to find a replacement. Parents must sign in and out for each shift. If there is a “no show” for the scheduled supervision a $25 penalty will be applied.
- The school has created training videos for parents to understand and learn how to do parking lot supervision.
Upon Arrival
Upon your arrival, buzz the front door of the school, enter the school, sign in the parent binder under the morning or after school supervision tab, put on a safety vest and pick up a stop sign. Exit the school entrance and walk to your signed up crosswalk duty.
I Nanaimo Street Crosswalk/Entrance Duty (near the church)
- If you signed up for the Nanaimo Street crosswalk/entrance duty near the church, wait on one side of the crosswalk/entrance and watch for pedestrians.
- When a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk/entrance, stop the approaching vehicle(s) using the stop sign, walk to the center of the crosswalk/entrance, direct pedestrians to cross, remain there until the pedestrians have crossed, return to the side and motion for vehicles to continue entering.
- If the Nanaimo Street becomes backed up you may need to have pedestrians wait a moment or two to allow vehicles to enter the parking lot, relieving the congestion. As cars enter the parking lot, direct the cars to alternate or take turns entering from from the left and right side of the entrance.
- Also near the Nanaimo Street crosswalk/entrance there are vehicles leaving the church parking lot and the upper school parking lot. If cars are not stopping taking turns exiting you may need to direct them.
- When your parking lot duty is over, buzz the front door of the school, enter the school, sign out in the parent binder under the morning or after school supervision tab, hang up the safety vest and return the stop sign.
II Waverley Avenue Crosswalk/Exit near the lower parking lot
- If you signed up for the Waverley Avenue crosswalk/exit at the lower parking lot, wait on one side of the crosswalk/exit and watch for pedestrians.
- When a pedestrian approaches the crosswalk/exit, stop the existing vehicle(s) using the stop sign, walk to the center of the crosswalk/exit, direct pedestrians to cross, remain there until the pedestrians have crossed, return to the side and motion for vehicles to continue exiting.
- If lower parking becomes backed up, you may need to have the pedestrians wait a moment or two to allow some of the vehicles to exit, relieving the congestion, then resume with crosswalk duty.
When your parking lot duty is over, buzz the front door of the school, enter the school, sign out in the parent binder under the morning or after school supervision tab, hang up the safety vest and return the stop sign.
III Waverley Ave and Nanaimo Street Crosswalk Duty
- If you signed up for the Nanaimo Street and Waverley Avenue crosswalk duty, you will stand at the corner closest to the school and watch for pedestrians.
- When a pedestrian approaches, stop the approaching vehicle(s) using the stop sign, walk to the centre of the street, direct pedestrians to cross, remain there until the pedestrians have crossed and return to the corner of the sidewalk.
- When your crosswalk duty is over, buzz the front door of the school, enter the school, sign out in the parent binder under the morning or after school supervision tab, hang up the safety vest and return the stop sign.
