ACADEMICS

Corpus Christi dedicates itself to a comprehensive education which emphasizes the realization of potential and favors a varied learning experience. The faculty in partnership with parents consciously reinforce the students’ development from an initial dependence on family and teachers toward a self-reliance appropriate to their level of maturity.

Corpus Christi encourages its students to gain a solid grounding in the teachings of Christ through prayer, respect for life, and fundamental academic skills, sharpen their intellectual curiosity, cultivate artistic expression, strive for physical well-being, exhibit compassionate behavior and increase their social consciousness.

LEARNING RESOURCE

The Learning Resource Department is comprised of learning resource teachers and education assistants who work in collaboration with classroom teachers to support students achieve successes in their school-life. The Department offers a variety of programs to help meet the academic needs of students, including Enrichment, Enriched Language Skills, Computer Skills and  Reading.

Staff members  with students who may require additional support, either on a one-to-one basis and/or in small groups.  Staff members also work toward preparing our students for the eventual transition to high school.

FINE ARTS

Fine Arts opportunities at Corpus Christi School include weekly Music and Visual Arts classes , Choir , Drama, Speech Arts, and Dance.

MUSIC

At Corpus Christi, musical expression happens through singing, instrument playing, poetry, rhymes, and games. In an atmosphere of experimentation and play, students are led to experience the elements of music through formal theory exercises and worksheets; through classroom singing; and through learning to play pitched and un-pitched percussion instruments. Music appreciation is taught by introducing students to live performances.

All students participate in music as part of their regular school program and participate in the annual Christmas Concert.

VISUAL ARTS

Corpus Christi School Visual Arts activities exposes students to drawing, painting, print-making, sculpture, ceramics and crafts tools to expand their imaginations in the visual arts.  Projects are linked to the curriculum, art history, current events and nature.

The faculty introduces students to the principles of design and arrangement, using a wide range of media and to the basic principles of realistic drawing. Corpus Christi School Visual Arts program helps children see, discuss and evaluate art in historical, cultural and design perspectives.

DRAMA

Corpus Christi School presents an annual  Christmas musical/concert. The entire school participates in the Christmas celebration, with students in grades 7 welcome to audition for drama, or participate in set design or stage crew roles. All students in grade 7 who wish to participate are given an opportunity to contribute in some capacity in this wonderful opportunity.

CHOIR

Students from Grades 3-7 are welcome to join the school choir.  Practices take place once a week at lunch, and there are various performances throughout the year. The choir also sings at mass each Wednesday.

SPEECH ARTS

All students are welcome to participate in Speech Arts as part of their regular school program. Students participate in an area of public speaking (bible reading, storytelling, poem recitation or speeches). Students are selected from each class to compete in the school Speech Arts competition.

ATHLETICS

The goal of the Corpus Christi athletic program is to develop skills, coordination, physical conditioning and stamina; to encourage a lifelong interest in physical fitness; to develop the willingness and ability of our students to work with others in a group effort; to promote participation in a variety of team sports while not encouraging specialization; and to provide an opportunity for personal satisfaction. The program plants the seed for a continuing appreciation of participating in a physically active and healthy life.  In the fall students from grades K – 7 participate in Tennis classes as part of their PE program.

SPIRITUAL ACTIVITIES

Spiritual activities at Corpus Christi  include mass every Wednesday, Spirit Day for Grade 7s, and Roman Catholic Challenge.  All students complete weekly Sunday mass journals/reflections. Students in Grade Two participate in the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, and students in Grade Seven participate in the Sacrament of Confirmation.

SERVICE AND LEADERSHIP 

Students in grades 6 and 7 are given opportunities to serve and demonstrate leadership  in the school by participating as  peer helpers, childcare monitors,  recycling monitors, and  door monitors

Grade Seven students are required to complete 20 hours of community service as part of their Confirmation Program, and there are many opportunities to volunteer for various school and parish initiatives
